Hoy se conmemora el 204 aniversario del natalicio del patricio Juan Pablo Duarte Diez, quien nació un 26 de enero de 1813.
Duarte es junto a Matías Ramón Mella y Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, uno de los Padres de la patria y fundador de la República Dominicana. Ideó y presidió la lucha de organización político-militar clandestina La Trinitaria, creada para luchar contra la invasión haitiana y por la independencia.
Desde el exilio Duarte supervisó y financió la guerra de independencia llevada a cabo por sus compañeros de lucha, lo que derivó en su ruina económica.
Su liderazgo lo convirtió en objeto de acusaciones que lo llevaron a ser expulsado de la recíén creada nación en varias ocasiones.
Su visión liberal se vio socavada por las élites conservadoras, que pretendían someter el país a las potencias coloniales y volver al regionalismo tradicional.
